Yoga and Me: Yoga and You?
You may ask, “why introduce yoga as a possible component of my Life Coaching experience?” Yoga has been an essential part of my life for the last twenty plus years. Without a doubt, it is part of my North Star and I love to share it with you. I have achieved much personal growth through its practice and thus recognize how beautifully it can support the life coaching process. This does not imply that practicing yoga is a pre-requisite to chosing me as your life coach. I simply feel you should be aware of all options open to you as we begin this journey together.
Yoga embodies a multitude of concepts which can help an individual move beyond the emotional and physical barriers which hold back so many of us. Because yoga is a deeply personal practice, not a competitive sport, it provides you with a unique opportunity to explore your body and mind in a compassionate and focused way. If you are not living your best life possible by neglecting your physical, mental, spiritual and emotional well-being, you are violating your right to a peaceful and healthy existence.Yoga helps restore balance between all elements of your being.
Some Core Yoga Principles:
- Ahimsa is the precept of non-violence. It teaches us that practicing non-violence begins with the self. Instead of forcing the body into performances it is not ready to do, you learn to experience it as a marvelous creation which responds to the cues of your inner intention and begins to change. Once you learn to dispel feelings of dissatisfaction and self-loathing, you move through your life with new-found confidence and pleasure.
- Satya, or truthfulness, teaches us that we need to be honest with ourselves and others. Only in a truthful context can we clearly see who we are and discover our purpose in life. Satya, however, must always be tempered with kindness and compassion; otherwise it functions as a disguise for perfectionism and the merciless inner judge.
- Avidya is defined as destructive self-ignorance. Developing an awareness of Avidya in ourselves reminds us to become observant students of life; we can cut through the deceptions of commercialized living or the imposed values of others and approach our lives with our eyes and hearts wide open. What do I really need to be truly happy?
At the physical level, yoga has much to offer. The postures, breathing exercises and deep relaxation tools are superb ways to return the body to a state of health and equilibrium. While developing strength, flexibility and balance, yoga also teaches one to listen to the body’s inner wisdom; an awareness of ones comfort zone in relation to ones growing edge. Perhaps most important of all, Yoga provides us with an unmatched stress reduction opportunity.
